The recall includes 255,000 Samsung and Samsung manufactured Kenmore washers.

Samsung is recalling 2.8 million washing machines with a potential for a risky detachment of its top lid, the South Korean company, and U.S. safety officials announced Friday.

The recall comes a month after the South Korean manufacturer recalled millions of its Galaxy Note 7 smartphones from consumers around the world, because of a mysterious problem that caused the phones' batteries to overheat and catch fire. Almost 3 million Samsung washing machines are being recalled in the U.S.

Apparently, the recall involves 34 different models of Samsung washing machines and has been initiated after more than 730 complaints.

It said this can occur when a high-speed spin cycle is used for bedding, bulky or water-resistant items and can present an injury risk to consumers.

Safety officials cited 733 reports of malfunctioning, top-loading washing machines and nine injuries, including the broken jaw and an injured shoulder.

John Herrington, senior vice president of Samsung Electronics America, said, "We are moving quickly and in partnership with the CPSC to ensure consumers know the options available to them and that any disruption in the home is minimized".

Depending on when the machine was purchased, owners are entitled to either an in-home fix, refund or rebate.
