Samsung recalls top-load washing machines

Samsung Recalls Top-Load Washing Machines

Samsung announced Friday it is recalling almost 3 million top-loading washing machines that could be an injury risk to users under certain circumstances.

Now the tech giant, who's Galaxy Note 7 phones experienced a similar issue, is offering consumers a few choices to remedy the problem: an in-home fix to reinforce the washer's top; a rebate that can be applied toward a new washer (Samsung or otherwise) as well as free installation and removal; or, if you've purchased a recalled washer in the last 30 days, a full refund from the original place of purchase.

It is the biggest washing machine recall in history in terms of units and reported incidents, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said. There are nine reports of injuries including a broken jaw and injured shoulder.

Customer complaints submitted to the government described washers that exploded and lodged debris in the walls, levitated or ripped sockets from their screws.

The washers were sold at Best Buy, The Home Depot, Lowes, Sears and other home appliance stores nationwide from March 2011 until November 2016 for between $450 and $1,500. The rebate amount is based on the manufacture date and model of the recalled washer.

Samsung said the problem occurred when a high-speed spin cycle was used to wash bedding or other bulky items.

Samsung did not respond to a request for comment.

How do I know if my washing machine is recalled? Consumers who purchased an affected model in the last 30 days are being offered a full refund. Those affected by the recall can elect to have a technician come to their home for free to reinforce their machines.

"Our priority is to reduce any safety risks in the home and to provide our customers with easy and simple choices in response to the recall", said John Herrington, a Samsung senior vice president, in the statement. That also comes with a one-year extension of the manufacturer's warranty. The value of those rebates will be determined by the age of the washer and its model.

Until users make their decision, they are advised to wash bulky items only on the delicate or waterproof cycles. Consumers should check with Samsung to see if their washer is recalled. The kit will include a new control panel guide (excluding mid-control models), two warning labels and step-by-step instructions for applying them to the machine.
