The Symbolism of Hillary Clinton Wearing Purple During Her Concession Speech

Bill Clinton sported a purple tie with his dark suit, and her former running mate Tim Kaine's wife Anne Holton shared a place on the stage, wearing a long knitted aubergine vest with her black trousers and long-sleeve shirt.

"This is painful and it will be for a long time", Clinton said from the New Yorker hotel in midtown Manhattan. Of course, purple is what you get when you mix blue and red, the signature colors for the Democratic and Republican parties, respectively, and she did, after all, encourage cooperation across party lines in her speech.

"Think of the suffragists who gathered at Seneca Falls in 1848 and those who kept fighting until women could cast their votes", Clinton said about the Seneca Falls Convention of 1848, which many call the first women's rights convention. White and purple (along with green) were official colors for the Suffragettes: according to The Telegraph, Pethick Lawrence, the honorary treasurer of the Women's Social and Political Union established the colors as such back in 1908. If you do, then we must accept this result and then look to the future.

"This is not the outcome we wanted or we worked so hard for, and I'm sorry we did not win this election for the values we share and the vision we hold for our country", Clinton said. But her message has offered strength and comfort to all of those desperately in need of it today, and in the days and weeks and months to come, it will likely also offer inspiration - a reminder that the fight isn't (and shouldn't be) over, even amidst such a crushing defeat.
