Earth's Water Mantle-Made Inside Planet, Suggests Study
John Tse is a researcher at The University of Saskatchewan in Canada, and he recently spoke about the findings in their computer simulation of this unbelievable phenomena.
Earth's water could be mantle-made, meaning it could have originated inside the planet from chemical reactions, or so suggests a study using a computer simulation of reactions in the planet's upper mantle. Scientists have reportedly been digging into the mystery of how the planet got its water as there were initially several theories regarding the source.
"We show it's possible to have water forming in Earth's natural environment, rather than being of extraterrestrial origin".
Unlike the other planets in the solar system, Earth is seen with abundance in water which has been supporting life for millions of years now. Scientists then took a step to study how Earth makes its own water.
"We set up a computer simulation very close to their experimental conditions and simulated the trajectory of the reaction", Tse said, adding that the study showed water forming within quartz that couldn't escape because of built up pressure.
This is an unbelievable discovery and serves not only to give a realistic explanation for earthquakes deep in the mantle but also it shows that our hypothesis concerning the extraterrestrial origins may very well be incomplete.
By testing the reaction under different temperatures and pressures comparable to those of the upper mantle 40 to 400 kilometers below the Earth's surface, Tse and colleagues found that at pressures 20,000 times higher than atmospheric pressure and at temperatures of about 1400 °C, reaction between silicon dioxide and liquid hydrogen forms silicon hydride and liquid water. As per the report, John Tse from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada said: "As long as the supply of hydrogen can be sustained, one can speculate that water formed from this process could be a contributor to the origin of water during Earth's early accretion".
While the reaction-based earthquakes remain a hypothesis, for now, the findings could provide a new lead for geologists looking to explain powerful tremors that don't fit the regular mould - and help us understand more about movement within the mantle.
British Geological Survey executive director John Ludden said that when overpressured water forms and is released, it could be a significant trigger for ultra-deep earthquakes deep down below the Earth's surface.
