Beijing Park rolls out toilet tissue security

Scan your face for toilet paper: Beijing tourist attraction's bid to stop toilet-paper thieves

The toilet is located at the Temple of Heaven Park, one of most popular tourism sites in Beijing, the People's Daily said in a report.

The tourist attraction is reportedly frequented by visitors who take large amounts of loo roll home.

The unusual measure will require people to scan their face before receiving a sheet of paper.

Machines at the Temple of Heaven park scan visitors' faces before dispensing a fixed length strip of paper.

Exhausted of dealing with locals' shit, face recognition systems have been installed at three restrooms inside the park.

According to the Legal Evening News, attendants have been posted in the public restrooms to assist and inform people about how to use the new machines.

The feed you get is 60 cm, which seems reasonable, but it sounds like those wanting more within a short amount of time will have to resort to Minority Report-style tactics to bypass the system.

Videos of visitors gleefully pulling off long rolls of toilet paper had gone viral online.

Six machines have been installed in the toilets to stop tourists from taking paper to use at home.

The park said its temporary two-week trial of the new facial recognition system, however, has been successful so far with toilet paper used in its public restrooms having dropped by 20%. However, it is claimed, some people still lack paper use manners.

There were also users who said they simply gave up using the machine after the facial recognition technology failed to work despite numerous attempts.

But the dispensers may now have become an attraction in their own right.

"Several low-class people have forced the rest of society to undertake a high-cost operation", said one user.

Earlier this month, the Beijing Municipal Administration Center of Parks launched a campaign on Weibo called "Use Paper Economically, Spread Civility".

Some people clearly have the money to buy toilet paper, but they have to take paper from public toilets.
