Canada record two wins on opening day of Women's World Curling Championships

Eve Muirhead

Rachel Homan and her Canada rink gave themselves a major confidence boost Monday in their quest for gold at the women's world curling championship, handing Switzerland its first loss to and taking sole possession of first place in the round-robin standings.

Elsewhere, Switzerland beat hosts China 8-7 while Canada and the Czech Republic were also victorious to maintain their 100 per cent record.

"I wouldn't say we were bad - we had a few dodgy stones that we needed to sort out, which put us on the back foot, but they played well. We never have an easy one in the first game", Muirhead said.

The home nation were unable to recover from the early blow as Canada came out 9-3 winners.

Courtney called the Swiss an "agressive team".

Muirhead was facing four United States of America counters when she played her last of the ninth but got inside them all to score one and reduce USA's lead to 8-7.

"We're really happy to get the two wins today", added lead Lisa Weagle. "You just try to make sure you sweep it right and make sure you're supporting her".

Earlier, the US led 3-1 through four ends, but a single in the fifth and a deuce in the sixth gave the Canadians their first lead of the day.

The Americans had last stone advantage in that extra end but Roth could only remove one of two Scottish stones near the button, giving Scotland another single stone steal and the 9-8 win. "Every day we're getting better and better at getting over the jet lag, and hopefully we keep learning the ice". "I've been struggling a little bit with my weight so it felt good to make a couple nice draws in that game".

Homan and her Ottawa Curling Club foursome recorded a 10-9 extra-end victory against Russian Federation in their third draw of the 12-country tournament.

The 27-year-old Homan and Courtenay are joined by third Emma Miskew and lead Lisa Weagle, along with alternate Cheryl Kreviazuk. Homan faces off against a competitive field which also includes two-time World Champion Alina Paetz of Switzerland, World Champion and Olympic bronze meda Watch Live: llist Eve Muirhead of Scotland, two-time European Champion Anna Sidorova of Russian Federation, and World Champion and Olympic bronze medallist Wang Bingyu of China.
