Equities slip on negative global cues, profit booking

The wider 51-scrip Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) fell by 33.20 points or 0.36 per cent to 9,126.85 points.

The barometer 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the BSE, which opened at 29,653.54 points, provisionally closed at 29,518.74 points (at 3.30 p.m.) - down 130.25 points or 0.44 per cent from the previous close at 29,648.99 points.

Brokers said investors booked profits after recent strong rally in stocks.

MUMBAI:The benchmark BSE Sensex fell nearly 129 points in early trade on Monday due to profit booking by investors after recent strong gains.

In the broader markets, BSE Midcap index slipped 0.1 per cent but Smallcap index rose 0.1 per cent.

Indian capital markets started the week on a muted note, despite Central cabinet clearing four supporting GST legislations, paving the way for their introduction in parliament as early as Monday. European markets were trading in negative territory.

Back home, the Rupee was trading nine paise higher at 65.48 against the US Dollar.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net buyers in the equity segment worth Rs 566.7 million on both BSE, NSE and MCX-SX on March 20, as per provisional data available at the BSE.

"Aviation and telecom sector stocks traded with sideways to bearish sentiments".

Among the BSE sectoral indices, Consumer Durables index registered the biggest gain with a jump of 1 per cent while Telecom index became the top loser with a dip of 1.9 per cent.
