EU says it's 'ready' to begin Brexit talks

Politico: Britain's Brexit Plan B

The pound weakened against the dollar today after the government confirmed Prime Minister Theresa May will trigger Article 50 on 29 March, kicking off the two-year formal process of Brexit.

Tim Barrow, the UK's permanent representative to the EU, informed the European Council of its intentions to invoke Article 50 next Wednesday.

Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union, David Davis, said: 'Last June, the people of the United Kingdom made the historic decision to leave the EU.

European Council President Donald Tusk said on Monday he would present the other 27 EU states with draft Brexit negotiating guidelines within 48 hours from the moment Britain formally triggers its exit from the bloc.

The historic start of the process, 44 years after the United Kingdom joined the EEC in 1973, will trigger a two-year countdown for negotiations over the exit terms and any interim trade deal.

U.K. Brexit Secretary David Davis has said "the first meeting, bluntly, will be about how we do this?"

"Everything is ready on this side", Margaritis Schinas, the chief spokesman for the European Union executive, told a regular news briefing. The remaining 27 European Union member states would then have to sign off on that move and formally give a mandate to French politician Michel Barnier to conduct the negotiations on their behalf.

"The legislation required for Brexit will leave little parliamentary time for anything else - and making a success of it will require a large volume of bills and secondary legislation to be passed by Parliament against a hard deadline", Hannah White, IFG's director of research, said in a release.

May hopes to negotiate terms that keep trade, financial and political relations with European Union member states as close as possible after Brexit, but also satisfy eurosceptics in her Conservative Party who demand a complete break.

Meanwhile, Downing Street denied reports suggesting that ministers were considering a snap election after triggering Article 50.

The prime minister will meet First Minister of Wales Carwyn Jones, as well as local businesses, as she tries to show she is including all areas of Britain in negotiations with the EU.

"The taoiseach has previously expressed impatience over the lack of clarity from Britain on Brexit", said Mr Adams.

That's why we believe the people should have the final say over the Conservative Brexit deal.

"It is clear that regardless of the outcome of the Brexit negotiations, civil justice co-operation of the type dealt with by these regulations will remain a necessity".

Brexit minister David Davis has said there would be no sudden drop in numbers, as it would take years to fill low-skilled jobs in hospitality, social care and agriculture now done by immigrants.

Negotiations will also soon hit a fundamental topic: Britain wants "frictionless" free trade, but says it will restore controls over immigration, ending the right of European Union citizens to live and work in Britain.
