European Union says 'everything is ready' for Brexit trigger

A third of European firms to cut investment due to Brexit

Britain's ambassador to the EU, Sir Tim Barrow, informed the office of European Council president Donald Tusk on Monday morning of the Prime Minister's plans.

The United Kingdom held a referendum last June in which Britons voted by a 52-48 percent margin to leave the European Union, the first member state ever to do so.

The German vehicle manufacturers now say the European Union is more important than British trade.

May is expected to make a statement to the House of Commons shortly after invoking the Article 50.

The EU leaders will later hold a summit in April or May to decide a final response.

Theresa May confirmed Article 50 date (file pic).

May, Cameron's eventual successor, said in October that she wanted to trigger Article 50 by the end of March.

Article 24 refers to the section of the WTO agreement on tariffs and trade that allows trading partners, in this case the European Union and the United Kingdom, to implement an interim agreement while they are negotiating a new trade arrangement.

The 60-year-old leader hopes to negotiate terms that keep trade, financial and political relations with European Union member states as close as possible after Brexit, but also satisfy eurosceptics in her Conservative Party who demand a complete break from an institution they say has stolen British sovereignty.

"If neither an interim or final deal is in place at the end of the two years the Government has allowed then the United Kingdom would crash out of Europe and we would suffer very significant economic detriment".

Negotiations will begin to outline a UK Brexit deal, which could include trade deals - although this might be handled separately.

"I believe that the Government's unrealistic expectation of having trade negotiations concluded within two years of triggering Article 50 - with no plan for extending this period - is compounding uncertainty and risks, causing unnecessary damage to our economy", he said.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said: "The Government has failed to build a consensus about what form Brexit should take".

"The German vehicle industry said we don't want any disruption of trade".

The developments come as an independent think tank warned today that up to 15 new bills could be needed to deliver Brexit.

The report said that Brexit will place a "huge burden" on Parliament and several government departments, with a white paper expected to be published as soon as before Easter.

The Supreme Court ruled in January that May's government must obtain approval from the British parliament to trigger Article 50, prompting the introduction of emergency legislation.
