Federation Internationale de Football Association bans Ghanaian referee Joseph Lamptey for life for 'match manipulation'

Ghanaian official Joseph Lamptey took charge of the game between South Africa and Senegal in November a year ago.

Ghanaian referee Joseph Lamptey has been banned for life for match manipulation in a World Cup qualifier, soccer's governing body Federation Internationale de Football Association said Monday.

But replays clearly showed the ball striking Senegal defender Kalidou Koulibaly's knee and dropping to the ground after he was penalised for handball. The offence was said to have been committed on November 12, 2016, during the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia qualifying match between South Africa and Senegal. His assistant was cleared.

South Africa scored the penalty kick to lead 1-0 in the 42nd minute in Polokwane last November.

"On the other hand, all charges against the Ghanaian match official David Lionheart Nii Lartey Laryea, whose behavior had also been the subject of investigations, were dismissed by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee".

"When I was there, I managed to attend some worldwide games but with development, if will affect every FIFA Referee we have in Ghana".

Lamptey can appeal to Federation Internationale de Football Association and then the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

An angry statement from the Senegalese federation (FSF) at the time read, "FSF have noted throughout the match biased or scandalous decisions that went in favour of the host team, which had a direct impact on the final score of the match, with the key to our defeat by 2 goals to 1, and the weakening of our position on the log for the qualification to the World Cup".

The revelation follows allegations South Africa paid a $US10-million ($A13 million) bribe to help secure the rights to the 2010 World Cup and that officials were duped by an Asian betting syndicate over the results of warm-up matches before the finals.

Last month, Federation Internationale de Football Association said it would shut down its Zurich-based betting monitoring subsidiary known as Early Warning System.
