French school shooting: 'Several hurt' in Grasse attack

LIVE'Several injured in shooting at high school in southern France

Eight people were injured after a shooting at a high school in the small southern French town of Grasse, the interior ministry said.

A police source told Le Monde that the shooter was a 17-year-old student at the Tocqueville school and was armed with several weapons, including grenades, a rifle and two handguns.

Christian Estrosi, president of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, said that the attack appeared to be "not at all" terror-related.

Grasse, a centre for perfume manufacturing, is roughly 44km from Nice, where a terror attack in July of previous year killed 86 people.

The shooting comes less than six weeks ahead of a two-round presidential election.

Education minister Najat Vallaud-Belkacem, who visited the school, called it "the insane act of a fragile young man fascinated by firearms ..." We thought the gunman was coming for us.

The other student was on the run, officials said.

In the immediate aftermath of the attack, national government organisation Visov sent out a terror warning.

All schools in Grasse were closed after the shooting incident. We're not used to it, we hear about these things in Paris but not here.

"His motivations seem to be linked to bad relations he had with other students in school", Grasse prosecutor Fabienne Atzori told reporters.

Security was bolstered around schools for the new school year in September and more than 3,000 reservists were called up.

The incident took place at the Alexis de Tocqueville high school in Grasse, near the city of Cannes on the French Riviera.

Later, a source in local police said that it was a student that tried to shoot the headmaster.

Christine Lagarde, the French director of the Washington-based International Monetary Fund, condemned what she called a "cowardly act of violence against" her staff.

France has some of the strictest gun laws in the world.
