The 2016 tornado that hit Virginia Feb. 24 was the deadliest since 1959.

Virginia's yearly tornado drill is slated for Tuesday at 9:45 a.m. Five people died and dozens more were injured after a powerful tornado touched down in Sussex County.

During the drills, the National Weather Service will send a tone alerted warning message over NOAA Weather Radios.

At the same time the outdoor sirens are being activated, indoor warning systems in schools and some public facilities will also be tested.

NWS Indiana averages 20-21 tornadoes a year.

A tornado hit Appomattox County and other parts of Virginia in a deadly storm on February 24, 2016. "Virginians should use the statewide tornado drill on March 21 as an opportunity to test their tornado emergency procedures and discuss preparedness efforts for these deadly and unexpected storms which can touch down in Virginia nearly any time". It is similar to what people would see or hear during an actual tornado warning, officials with Fairfax County said.

The tests are set to be broadcast by all radio, TV and cable systems at 10:15 a.m. and 7:35 p.m. ET.

Tornadoes are possible in this area.

Bill Sammler of the National Weather Service said in a statement, "tornadoes can occur any month of the year".

Mobile homes or similar structures can not stand up to the wind speed and pressure of a tornado and are not safe shelters, the department reports.
