GOP chairman praises Supreme Court pick as hearing opens

He pledged to be independent or "hang up the robe". "For the truth is, a judge who likes every outcome he reaches is probably a pretty bad judge, stretching for the policy results he prefers rather than those the law compels".

In the presidential election between Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton, Cruz said, "the people chose originalism, textualism and the rule of law".

Hawaii Sen. Mazie Hirono delivered some of the sharpest criticism of the day, saying that in reviewing Gorsuch's opinions, "I have not seen that the rights of minorities are a priority for you".

Gorsuch has been through the confirmation process before.

We also sit down with veteran journalist Tom Rosenstiel to discuss his debut novel Shining City, a timely thriller about the inner workings of a controversial Supreme Court nomination.

Gardner referenced a variety of Colorado lawmakers in his speech, including praise from former Gov. Bill Ritter and former Attorney General John Suthers. The question and answer sessions will follow on Tuesday and Wednesday. Committee chairman Chuck Grassley, an Iowa Republican, said he expects a committee vote on Gorsuch's nomination on April 3, which would allow the full Senate to take up the nomination that week. Will Gorsuch provide that accountability as a justice, and what was his role in those arguments while at DOJ?

What happens next week will provide much information about whether Gorsuch will actually become a justice.

Many of the Democrats are ready to put up a fight, having not forgiven the Republicans for blocking a confirmation hearing on Judge Merrick Garland, the highly regarded, liberal appeals court judge who was President Obama's choice to replace Scalia. Dianne Feinstein on the Senate Judiciary Committee. "'Gorsuch's nomination represents an imminent threat to America's most cherished rights and most vulnerable citizens, and millions of Americans across the country are demanding that Democratic leadership use everything in their power to block it, ' the alliance said". "It's the type of acclaim we keep hearing from Democrats and Republicans in the legal community".

"If you believe this has been a great plan to get a Trump nominee on the court you had to believe Trump was going to win to begin with".

Said Graham: "I don't feel like any injustice has been done to anybody here". This should take the balance of the day on Wednesday, after which we expect the actual hearing to conclude.

The most famous modern cases dealing with "substantive rights not expressly enumerated in the text of the Constitution or its amendments" are Griswold v. CT (1965), which recognized a constitutional right to privacy, and Roe v. Wade (1973), which said the right to privacy included "a woman's decision whether or not to terminate her pregnancy".

In 2013, when Democrats were in the majority they changed the rules so that federal judges could be confirmed with a simple majority vote, but they maintained the long-standing requirement that Supreme Court picks would first need 60 votes to move their confirmation forward without the threat of a filibuster.
