Gorsuch Told Class 'Many' Women Manipulate Maternity Leave: Student
The first three Democrats speaking at the hearing of Judge Neil Gorsuch in the Senate Judiciary Committee began their speeches invoking the decision by Republicans to refuse a hearing or vote on Garland past year after the death of Justice Antonin Scalia.
Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, on Monday blasted his Republican colleagues for refusing to hold confirmation hearings for Judge Merrick Garland, President Barack Obama's nominee to the Supreme Court.
The court's ideological balance is at stake.
"President Trump repeatedly promised to appoint someone in the mold of Justice Scalia", she said, "and that the nomination of Judge Gorsuch illustrates that he is a man of his word". Richard Blumenthal will be looking for Trump's Supreme Court nominee to demonstrate a willingness to stand up to the president.
Fellow Democrat Senator Sheldon Whitehouse said he feared Mr Gorsuch's appointment could lead to another "Republican 5-4 special interest spree".
Hatch blasted Democrats for wanting Gorsuch to outline how he would vote on certain cases, saying that to them, "judicial independence requires he be beholden to them and [their] political agenda" on issues like abortion.
If Mr Gorsuch, 49, is approved by the Senate he would restore a 5-4 conservative majority on America's highest court. "Most Americans question whether we need a Supreme Court justice with the vision of Donald Trump".
According to the Daily Intelligencer, Jennifer Sisk, who took Gorsuch's legal ethics and professionalism course in 2016, accused Gorsuch of implying "women intentionally manipulate companies and plan to disadvantage their companies, starting from the first interview".
Schofield pointed to The Gorsuch Report, prepared by the non-partisan legal advocacy group Alliance for Justice, as a good summary of why Gorsuch is a poor nominee. "We also call on Senate Democrats to do whatever they can to stop the Gorsuch nomination". "How did we go from being able to understand that Scalia was a well-qualified conservative and Ginsburg was a well-qualified liberal and recognized that elections mattered?"
Republicans control the Senate and they can change the chamber's rules to make it easier to confirm Mr Gorsuch if any attempt is made to block him.
While those documents unsurprisingly haven't made it before deadline - a trend with so many of Trump's appointees - Democrats have seen enough to know that they are opposed. These include Hobby Lobby, where he ruled that the chain wasn't required to provide free contraception coverage; A case where he ruled that a trucking company was justified in firing a trucker who abandoned his cargo when his vehicle broke down in sub-zero temperatures; and a college professor who Gorsuch said had no claim for discrimination after she was sacked for taking time off to recover from cancer.
"As a former student, I am a witness to the respect that he showed towards his female students and fellow professors at Colorado Law", she said in a statement. And others will use the hearings to raise concerns about the direction of the Roberts Court in the Trump Era, given the large array of critical issues that could soon come before SCOTUS, including some that were stalled a year ago due to a deadlocked Court awaiting Scalia's replacement. Questioning of Gorsuch will begin Tuesday and is likely to continue for several days.
Neil Gorsuch prepares for Senate questions. McConnell said whether or not that happens is up to Democrats.
