House GOP Considers Changes to Health-Care Bill

'Fox News Sunday': Paul Ryan: ObamaCare Replacement Bill Still Needs Work, But Likely to Pass Soon

The trip to the Capitol comes amid doubts leadership has enough votes to pass the measure in its current form.

During a House Budget Committee meeting last week, Bergman voted yes to send the bill to the full House.

Those changes include allowing states the option of imposing Medicaid work requirements and the option of accepting Medicaid funding through block grants. Walker said he now supported the bill. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, said his boss "shares (governors') concerns about the need to protect the Medicaid expansion population and give governors more flexibility to ensure they can design programs that meet the needs of their states".

Trump met with about a dozen House conservatives at the White House and afterward declared that he had won them over to the plan, known formally as the American Health Care Act.

On Friday, Trump said he was "100 percent" committed to the bill after his meeting with conservative lawmakers.

But there was no sign of changes to address a top priority of the hard-line conservative House Freedom Caucus, which wants to bring health insurance premiums down quickly.

Meadows took issue with the Medicaid work requirements being optional, saying that provision only moves the ball "a couple of yards" down a very large field. "He's the one who has helped negotiate the changes in this bill with members from all over our caucus". It doesn't repeal Obamacare.

Representative Charlie Dent, a Republican moderate, said the House bill should be crafted to win support in the Senate, where numerous Republicans have voiced skepticism.

"There are people from the middle and from the right who have various concerns", he said at a conservative forum.

The House will vote on the GOP's ObamaCare repeal and replace plan Thursday after almost seven years of trying to take down the healthcare law. To the extent that a change in tax credits makes healthcare more affordable for some people, insurers and hospitals could stand to benefit.

Senator Susan Collins of ME told "Meet the Press" that the Obamacare replacement would leave 14 million people without health coverage over the next year and 24 million over the next decade. Obamacare expanded insurance to about 20 million Americans.
