LaMarcus Aldridge cleared to play as Spurs host Portland

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said Aldridge has been dealing with issues all season but added his joy at the strong diagnosis.

Aldridge's return comes after what the team described as a "process" led by its medical staff, which included multiple tests and examinations, as well as consultations with cardiology experts. The Spurs host Aldridge's former club, the Portland Trail Blazers, on Wednesday.

"We are thankful that LaMarcus will be able to rejoin the team", Spurs general manager RC Buford said in a statement. "All of us have been impressed with the professionalism and the grace he has shown in dealing with this hard situation".

The Spurs were down by three points with 2.5 seconds left in Wednesday night's game against the Trail Blazers and Manu Ginobili was at the foul line.

While Aldridge's health is the most important thing, the Spurs will be happy to have their big man back on the court. Being a consummate pro, he was able to do everything that was necessary to bring this to some sort of a conclusion. "He's shown a lot of class and a lot of fortitude in the way he's done it all", Pop said.

Aldridge was diagnosed with Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome in April 2007 while with the Portland Trail Blazers, a genetic condition he's carried since birth.

After coming out completely flat in a loss at New Orleans on Tuesday night, the Blazers (30-37) earned what might be their most impressive win of the season, handing San Antonio (52-15) just their seventh home loss of the year.

There's good news for the Spurs and even better news for LaMarcus Aldridge. According to ESPN, Aldridge is now averaging 17.3 points and 7.4 rebounds per game this season. "To beat a team like San Antonio on the road, and not only that, but how we won, I thought it was one of our better games as far as staying focused throughout the game".

However, with several close playoff games a near-certainty, Ginobili will need to work on his free-throw shooting - both when to make shots and when to miss them.
