Man Arrested For Slashing £10m National Gallery Masterpiece With Screwdriver

Painting worth millions at National slashed twice by man with a screwdriver

An iconic English painting, The Morning Walk, by Sir Thomas Gainsborough has been vandalised by a visitor to the National gallery in London.

Recalling the ordeal, Shashikanth said: "A few people with kids were in a panic and started running".

But the art-lover, from Berkshire, declined.

"The preliminary reports suggest that the damage can be repaired relatively easily and the picture should be back on the wall shortly", the release said.

He said: "I was deeply hurt by that incident, I love paintings so that when someone harms it, it's horrible", saying he hoped the quick police action would dissuade others from trying to damage artworks. Members of the public and staff restrained a man who scratched the work, with a sharp object causing surface damage to the masterpiece.

The East Wing had to be evacuated while investigations took place, and did not open for two hours.

The painting suffered "two long scratches, which have penetrated the paint layers, but not the supporting canvas".

Keith Gregory, 63, was arrested on Saturday after allegedly damaging Thomas Gainsborough's painting "The Morning Walk" in the prestigious London museum.

Gregory "appeared in custody at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Monday, 20 March and was remanded to next appear on Thursday, 23 March", the police said.

"The Morning Walk" also gained a wider audience more recently, when it formed part of the backdrop to a meeting between James Bond and Q in the film Skyfall. "William Hallett and Elizabeth Stephen were both aged 21 and due to be married in the summer of 1785, shortly after the painting was completed", according to the museum's description on its website.
