National Football League free agency: Ex-Eagles QB Chase Daniel visiting Saints, report says

Chase Daniel was cut after the Eagles brought back Nick Foles

The Saints would represent a homecoming of sorts for Daniel, who spent the first four years of his career as a backup with New Orleans.

The Jets hosted free agent Josh McCown over the weekend, but didn't strike a deal. Instead, Bradford was traded to Minnesota at the last minute and Daniel instead backed up Wentz. He was released after the Eagles brought back Nick Foles.

Daniel was a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2007 and 2008 and led Missouri football into a brief period of relevance while the school still played in the Big 12.

Daniel, 30, reportedly wants a chance to fight for a starting job, which seems slightly more hard to do in New Orleans, where some guy named Drew Brees is pretty established.

Daniel signed a free-agent deal with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2013 and spent three seasons as Alex Smith's primary backup before signing a three-year with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2016.

If it doesn't work out with Daniel, or McCown, or Cutler, the Jets have other options.

Daniel mentored Eagles rookie Carson Wentz last season and could be a could be an asset in the progression of the Jets' two young quarterbacks, Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty.

Daniel, 30, also visited the Saints over the weekend but left without signing a contract. But though the two-day visit reportedly included dinner with general manager Mike Maccagnan and head coach Todd Bowles, it ended without a signed contract.
