Royal Jordanian warns about electronics prohibition on U.S. flights

Airline electronics ban

"Fly to the U.S. with RJ now that you're allowed to", the ad read, along with a headline that crossed out "Ban" to say "Bon Voyage!"

An aviation official said U.S. carriers are not impacted because none flies directly from the countries in question to the U.S. Neither source would specify what airlines were impacted beyond Royal Jordanian Airlines, which tweeted Monday that it will ban most electronics from the cabins on its flights to and from its North American destinations.

A representative of Saudi Arabian Airlines, based at JFK International Airport in NY, told BuzzFeed News that the ban begins immediately, and covers all electronic devices, excluding cellphones. Saudia operates USA flights from the two cities.

In a written statement, the Department of Homeland Security said, "We have no comment on potential security precautions, but will provide any update as appropriate".

As of Monday afternoon, the Transportation Security Administration had not issued a warning banning the electronic devices listed by Royal Jordanian in its social media announcement.

The Transportation Security Administration, which ensures that security meets USA standards at airports that send flights to the USA, and the Department of Homeland Security each said: "We have no comment on potential security precautions, but will provide any update as appropriate".

The airline serves New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, as well Montreal and Detroit.

The new rule on electronics follows a revised order by the USA government to ban travel to the United States by citizens of several Muslim-majority countries. In February, after a federal court temporarily froze the travel ban he ordered, the airline turned the ban into fodder for a cheeky advertisement.

It is not immediately clear if the restriction on electronic devices applies to other airlines. Many commented that the airline would lose customers over this policy.

Gulf carriers Emirates Airline, Qatar Airways and Etihad Airways did not immediately respond to comment.
