Sanctuary Travis County Released 142 Illegal Immigrants In A Week

Instead, it was a snapshot of law enforcement agencies, including in Maryland and Virginia, that refused to honor a total of 206 detainers issued by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement branch of the Department of Homeland Security from January 28 to February 3. Officials reported that 206 criminally charged illegal immigrants were released from the custody of jails after an immigration detainer had been issued. This was out of a total of 3,083 detainers issued that week.

The White House's first-ever report on local governments that don't cooperate with federal immigration agents shows Travis County officials declined dozens of requests to hold inmates in the days leading up to the county's recent showdown with Gov. The report provides information on declined detainers and requests for notification for that reporting period. Bastrop County declined three requests and Williamson County declined four.

A significant portion of these detainers were ignored by Travis County, Texas. "Today's report from DHS is deeply disturbing and highlights the urgent need for a statewide sanctuary city ban in Texas", Abbott said. "Texas will act to put an end to sanctuary policies that put the lives of our citizens at risk".

In his January 25 executive order intensifying deportation efforts, President Trump said the Homeland Security secretary should compile a list of the agencies that refused to detain immigrants past the time they are supposed to be released and the crimes those immigrants are accused of, and make it public "on a weekly basis".

The charges range from homicide and rape to driving violations and probation violations.

The suspects in those jails had convictions for domestic violence, burglary and forgery, among other crimes. Some say that cooperating can undermine local trust in the police if immigrants are afraid that reporting a crime will result in their own deportation.

ICE officials issued detainers for these criminal aliens to prevent them from being released to the general public where they might commit future crimes.

In a move to put public pressure on "sanctuary cities", the Department of Homeland Security on Monday published a list of 118 localities that have refused to cooperate with federal requests to detain undocumented immigrants.

After almost declining an ICE detainer issued for a man accused of molesting a child, Hernandez said she would consider expanding her policy to include crimes committed against children and elderly. Hundreds of local police agencies depend on hundreds of millions of dollars in grants from Homeland Security and the Department of Justice.
