IFA president Joe Healy said the latest shocking revelations on the failure of Brazil to meet European Union standards and controls in the meat sector raises very serious concerns around European Union meat imports.

That ban would stay in place until Brazil was able to confirm companies exporting meat to Chile had been adequately vetted.

On Friday, regulators from the United States, which recently began importing fresh beef from Brazil, said they were monitoring the issue but that inspections at import terminals there should prevent any health risks.

"The Commission will ensure that any of the establishments implicated in the fraud are suspended from exporting to the EU", a spokesman for the European Commission told a press briefing.

CHINA has placed a temporary ban on Brazilian meat imports, following dramatic weekend media reports published across the world suggesting a major meat industry scandal is unfolding in Brazil.

To minimize the scandal, President Michel Temer said the probe involved only 21 of Brazil's more than 4,800 meat processing units.

Brazilian authorities announced Friday an investigation into evidence suggesting that companies including JBS SA and BRF SA, the country's largest meat producers, bribed government officials to approve the sale and export of contaminated meat.

At least 30 people have been arrested in the scandal, with Brazilian police raiding more than a dozen processing plants.

Food giants JBS SA and BRF SA have taken out full-page newspaper ads and paid for prime-time television spots to reassure consumers their meat is safe to eat after finding themselves at the center of Brazil's latest corruption probe.

The Agriculture Ministry said the scandal affects the country's reputations as meat trader.

"Brazil is facing a potential loss of export revenues of about US$3.5 billion". "It can not be discredited just because of a small group".

Brazilian meat is shipped to 150 nations; sales a year ago reached $5.9 billion (5.48 billion euros) in poultry and $4.3 billion in beef, according to government data.

In an unusual move on a Sunday, Temer welcomed about 20 ambassadors from among the 150 nations that import Brazilian meat to Planalto Palace in response to doubts raised after it was revealed that certain companies were adulterating spoiled meat to hide the odor, then selling it both in the local market and to foreign buyers, Efe news reported.

The proposed trade deal between Europe and Mercosur, the trading bloc which includes Brazil and Argentina, had been expected to include a more preferential tariff regime for beef imports from Mercosur countries.
