Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch's confirmation hearing

Supreme Court Nominee Neil Gorsuch faces Senate Judiciary Committee

The Federalist SocietyThe issue of abortion is guaranteed to come up this week when the Senate Judiciary Committee begins confirmation hearings on the nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Dr. Barbara Perry, Director of Presidential Studies at the University of Virginia's Miller Center and a former Judicial Fellow at the US Supreme Court, told The Independent that no person with "a nomination has been denied a hearing, since hearings have been in place" in the 20th century.

Judging from some letters we received and published throughout 2016, a driving motive behind the quest for Republican victory was the fear Hillary Clinton as president would upset the balance of power on the U.S. Supreme Court, tilting it to the left, possibly for a generation or more.

Memories are still raw of Republicans' refusal to even consider former Democratic President Barack Obama's choice to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court. Alito Jr., also replaced Republican nominees.

A member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Blumenthal will be questioning Gorsuch at his confirmation hearing this week. Two are Colorado's USA senators: Michael Benet, a Democrat, and Cory Gardner, a Republican.

In his opening statement, Grassley quoted the late Justice Antonin Scalia on the importance of separation of powers, which gives power to the Bill of Rights.

Gorsuch's four-day confirmation hearing began Monday morning. Dianne Feinstein said of Gorsuch, is "whether he will protect the legal and constitutional rights of all Americans". President Bush's two nominees, John Roberts and Samuel. "We have no doubt that he'll be the same kind of Justice on the Supreme Court".

"Last month, [California Senator Diane] Feinstein - the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee - requested information from Gorsuch about all "significant" cases in which Gorsuch helped make decisions about litigation or craft strategy".

Grassley has set a committee vote on Gorsuch's nomination for April 3rd, with Republicans hoping for a vote in the full Senate before the Easter recess. Originalism rejects all judicial decision making that does not adhere to the text of the Constitution as written, something that more moderate and liberal justices have long rejected because of the many issues they face that the framers could never have anticipated that require nuanced interpretations.

"They see this as President Trump fulfilling a campaign promise that he made and that was something that really unified a lot of evangelicals that may have had some concerns about Trump the candidate", said Marx.

"Sometimes it's the individual who will win, sometimes it's the little guy, sometimes it's not", Republican Senator Mike Lee of Utah said on the Bloomberg Law radio show Thursday.

Without googling, who is Neil Gorsuch? In early March a group of 11 progressive political organizations signed a letter demanding that all Senate Democrats refuse to confirm. After the event with senators and progressives in front of the court last week, volunteers and staff delivered petitions with over a million signatures, they said, urging senators from both parties to oppose Gorsuch's nomination. Gorsuch told several lawmakers privately that he was disheartened by Trump's attacks on judges who ruled against him over his immigration ban, but that didn't go far enough for Democrats.
