United Kingdom to launch European Union divorce on March 29

Prime Minister Theresa May is making a visit to Wales before she triggers Article 50 to launch the Brexit process

Tim Barrow, the UK's envoy to the EU, informed the bloc's president Donald Tusk on Monday morning that May will invoke Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty-the official mechanism by which a member state withdraws from the union.

June. 23: Britain votes 52 percent to 48 percent to leave the European Union. "Next Wednesday, the government will deliver on that decision and formally start the process by triggering Article 50", Brexit secretary David Davis said in a statement Monday.

She added: "The Prime Minister's attitude should worry all of us hoping that negotiations with Europe will not be a disaster because - and let me put it bluntly - if she shows the same condescension and inflexibility, the same tin ear, to other European Union countries as she has to Scotland then Brexit process will hit the rocks".

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said: "The Government has failed to build a consensus about what form Brexit should take".

London has repeatedly said it wants to maintain good relations with its European allies, but major battles await, in particular over budget contributions, immigration and future trade ties. The EU says Britain must pay a hefty divorce bill of up to 60 billion euros ($64 billion), to cover EU staff pensions and other expenses the United Kingdom has committed to.

"There will be a letter and she will notify President Tusk in writing".

It is not quite accurate to say nothing much is going to happen after article 50 is triggered next week, but the huge excitement built up around "the date" is likely to prove misplaced.

And Tory MP Sir Eric Pickles said: "It's a massive moment, I'm pleased that we're getting on with it".

May's plan to withdraw Britain from Europe's single market has also provoked concern in Northern Ireland, by raising the prospect of the return of customs posts with European Union member Ireland to the south.

Jean Claude Juncker, as European Commission president, will oversee the process, while Barnier and his taskforce of negotiators deal with the United Kingdom government for the next two years.

A spokesman for the European Commission said: "Everything is ready on this side".

Theresa May first came to Wales in the baking hot sun in Cardiff Bay last summer, a short time after she became Prime Minister. Leaving the Single Market was not on the ballot paper in the referendum, it is a political choice made by Theresa May.

Later this week EU leaders will gather in Rome to mark the 60th anniversary of the treaties with established the European Economic Community - but Mrs May won't be attending.
