Why Manipur's Iron Lady Secured Only 90 Votes

Event Highlights

Politics in Manipur is often viewed as the man's business.

After breaking her fast a year ago, Irom formed her political party-the Peoples' Resurgence and Justice Alliance.

"But I will continue my fight against AFSPA until and unless it is repealed".

It was a shocking defeat for Irom, as she got just 90 votes in the Manipur Assembly elections, the results of which were announced on Saturday. But no one expected she would get less than 100 votes, said an analyst. So sure was he of his victory that never once did he publicly scoff Sharmila's foray into politics and instead welcomed her move. But incredibly, many of those who had supported Irom turned their backs on her as soon as she ended her fast, including some members of her family. And after two days when he was finally allowed to meet her, his reported insistence on sitting with Sharmila at the meira shang (women's shelter) where the influential Meira Paibis (Women Torchbearers) had gathered, caused much anger.

Making it clear that she had not given up her fight, Sharmila said, "I will continue my fight for human rights and for protecting democratic values with more vigour after I return from here". She also told media that she will be looking into the tribal issues of Attapadi. My birthday has always been just like another day in my life. The BJP and Congress are neck and neck with 21 and 28 wins respectively.

Congress was led by its mascot Ibobi Singh who ruled for three terms without a strong opposition, while BJP was steered by master strategist Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam Cabinet minister and convenor of the BJP-led North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA).

As the world's longest hunger striker Irom Chanu Sharmila celebrates her 45th birthday today, here are some facts which you may not know about the "Iron Lady of Manipur".
