4/20 pot celebrations marked by arrests at US Capitol

NORML Political Director Justin Strekal

The demonstration Thursday was intended as a protest against federal interference with states that have legal pot.

The House vote came Thursday on the 4/20 holiday after it debated whether to try stamping out attempts to use religious freedoms to open places where marijuana users can gather.

Hillterns, listen up. Leaders of DCMJ, the District's largest marijuana advocacy group known for handing out thousands of free joints on Inauguration Day, will be giving out two free joints to members of Congress, hill staffers, interns, Capitol Hill support staff and credentialed journalists over 21 years old Thursday.

DCMJ organized this first annual #JointSession event in honor of "4/20", a holiday celebrated by cannabis enthusiasts, to push for reform in marijuana policy. ("Guess I gotta go buy me a bag now!" exclaimed one disappointed onlooker wearing a bucket hat patterned with marijuana leaves.) One activist from Smart Approaches to Marijuana, a group that opposes cannabis legalization, handed out bags of Cheetos with anti-marijuana talking points stapled to them.

In addition, up to six marijuana plants can be grown inside a home.

It is now legal to possess marijuana in Washington D.C., but it is still illegal to buy or sell. Upon further look, you'll notice each juice offers options to add "love" or "lots of love" to your order, which means you'll get a special, legal gift of a bag of weed with your delivery.

The giveaway happened on a city street next to the USA capitol.

The Trump administration has a different view on the legalization of marijuana.

Seven of those arrested were members of DCMJ, including the other co-founder Adam Eidinger, and two were part of a local cannabis co-op who were helping out with the giveaway.

Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly recently called marijuana "a potentially unsafe gateway drug that frequently leads to the use of harder drugs" - a view long held by drug warriors despite scant evidence of its validity. However, despite the arrests, the free weed giveaway carried on. Possession and distribution of marijuana is illegal under federal law, while the DC government allows possession in small quantities. As Schiller noted, members of Congress and their staffs are not subject to the drug testing statutes that keep other federal employees, including contractors who work in Congress, from consuming marijuana.
