AIMIM routed in Latur, Prabhani civic elections; Setback to Owaisi's expansion plans

Narendra Modi impact: BJP goes from zero to hero in Latur, wins 38 seats in bastion of late Vilasrao Deshmukh

Extending its winning streak, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has won the Latur Municipal Corporation election handsomely.

In the 70-member Latur Municipal Corporation, BJP won 41 seats - getting majority while Congress was stranded to 28. In the 2012 Latur Municipal Corporation elections, Congress had won just 49 wards while the NCP bagged 13 and Shiv Sena emerged victorious in 6 wards.

The BJP won 40 out of 70-seats in Latur. It won 32 of the 66 seats in Chandrapur.

Hailing the BJP's performance, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, 'BJP is creating history yet again'.

The win today consolidates the BJP's position as Maharashtra's number one party, up from number four only a few years ago.

In Latur, the main parties in the fray are the ruling Congress, Shiv Sena, Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Asaduddin Owaisi led All India Majlise Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) which is contesting the Latur local elections for the first time.

Along with Latur, Parbhani and Chandrapur Municipal Corporations also went to the poll on Wednesday. It was a test of political clout for BJP leader and state minister Sambhajirao Nilangekar and the local Congress MLA Amit Deshmukh. Results are expected to be declared later on Friday.

Many congratulations to all katyakartas who worked hard for this victory! The party also made inroads into the hinterland in the elections held in February for 25 Zilla Parishads. A total of 7,93,621 voters were eligible to exercise their franchise in the three corporations, where 62 per cent voting was registered.

In Chandrapur 460 candidates were in the ring, followed by Parbhani (418) and Latur (406).

Meanwhile, Mungantiwar, the Guardian minister of Chandrapur district, thanked the voters and party workers for the party's victory. On the other hand, the BJP continues to register victory after victory in Maharashtra and other parts of the country.
