Anti-Maduro protesters take to the streets again

General Motors

According to GM, other assets like vehicles were also taken away from the facility, resulting in irreversible damage to the firm.

Under the late President Hugo Chavez, who took power in 1999, the government took over private oil, telecommunications, energy, and cement businesses.

Capriles responded on Twitter that Maduro, "like all dictators", is a compulsive liar, and called on Venezuelans to keep up protests.

"It is evident this crime was deliberately planned as the suspect. altered the site of the incident, collecting 27 (spent) shells that officials later found on him", the minister said. GM has operated in Venezuela for almost 70 years, employing 2,700 people there and operating 79 dealerships.

This isn't the first time Venezuela's government has seized foreign-owned factories.

A counter rally of supporters of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was organized in Caracas on Wednesday.

Vicente Paez, a local councilman, said Guitan was an employee of a Caracas-area city governed by an opposition mayor and didn't partake in the protests.

The company's departure is another sign of instability in Venezuela, where yesterday tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets holding signs that read "Maduro out" and "Down with dictatorship".

In a statement released by GM on Wednesday, the company said its plant had been "unexpectedly taken by the public authorities, preventing normal operation". Protesters accuse Maduro of eroding democracy and mismanaging the country's increasingly cash-strapped economy.

It wasn't clear whether these marchers would have any more success reaching the office than Wednesday's thousands of demonstrators, who were directed away from government buildings by security forces firing tear gas canisters.

The turmoil is set against an economic crisis in which unemployment is set to surpass 25%, and people have struggled for years with food and medical shortages and skyrocketing prices.

Maduro supporter Diosdado Cabello, a National Assembly lawmaker with the ruling United Socialist Party, decried the National Guard member's death and blamed it on opposition protesters.

The renewed wave of protests was sparked by a Supreme Court move in March to assume the powers of the opposition-led Congress, a move that was reversed a few days later. He didn't provide any evidence to back up the claim, and the opposition rejected it as an attempt to intimidate Venezuelans from exercising their constitutional right to protest.

He said at an official event on Thursday that the opposition had expressed readiness to begin political talks. The oil giant sought compensation of $16.6 billion and the company went to win a $1.4 billion judgment, but earlier this year the arbitration panel determined that Venezuela had to pay only $180 million. Over 400 people were arrested during protests on Wednesday, rights group Penal Forum said.
