Apple's glass cube on Fifth Avenue to be removed, NYC records show

Apple's iconic glass cube at NYC flagship store is coming down

While losing the glass staircase, which is nearly as famous as the cube, might seem unlikely, we've already seen Apple use a Jony Ive-designed ceramic staircase in its Nanjing store in China.

Apple's iconic glass cube on Fifth Avenue will be no more-well, at least for a little bit.

New York City issued a permit on April 12 for work described as "full removal of glass cubical structure at Apple store entrance" at the 767 Fifth Ave. plaza.

Apple did not have a comment on the removal of the cube, but said in a statement that it looks "forward to creating an incredible new Apple Fifth Avenue, where our customers will enjoy new services and experiences in a much larger space".

Apple's job is expected to cost $2 million, as per the DOB filings, and demolition will be overseen by Englewood, New Jersey-based Waldorf Exteriors.

All have signed documents saying they would not discuss the project, one executive admitted before hanging up. The store is growing from 32,000 square feet to 77,000 square feet, giving Apple more space at its flagship NY location.

The store has been relocated to the former FAO Schwarz space at the same address in the meantime.

So far, no permits have been issued to reinstall the glass cube, which has become selfie central for tourists.
