British lawmakers back PM May, give resounding approval to snap election

British lawmakers voted by a resounding 522 to 13 on Wednesday to back Prime Minister Theresa May's call for a snap election on June 8.

May has said an early general election will help strengthen Brexit negotiations and stressed how Britain needs "strong leadership" to support the talks and to prepare for leaving the EU.

Philip Dunne, Owen Paterson, Daniel Kawczynski, Lucy Allan, Mark Pritchard, and Glyn Davies, all voted with the government to abandon the fixed-term parliament for 2015-20, and instead hold a general election on June 8. The United Kingdom will have no say in the process.

Elections are to be held in England for directly elected mayors in six devolved new super-regions plus two existing councils. "A Prime Minister who can not be trusted", said Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Votes in France in April and May, and in Germany in September, have the potential to reshape the political landscape around the two years of Brexit talks with the European Union expected to start in earnest in June.

"She says it's about leadership, yet is refusing to defend her record in television debates and it's not hard to see why".

May formally notified the European Union on March 29 of Britain's intention to leave, and has said she is confident of reaching a deal on the terms of withdrawal in the two years available.

"A general election is the best way to strengthen Britain's hand in the negotiations ahead", May told lawmakers at the outset of a 90-minute debate.

The leader of the main opposition Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn, pressed May in Parliament Wednesday to take part in a televised debate ahead of the election, but May maintained she had no interest in doing so.

Speaking on Sky News, she said: "You could make the case that there is a little bit of political expediency in going early before that economic bite hits people's sentiment".

Currently, the Conservative Party has a narrow majority of 330 of the 650 seats in the House of Commons.

"I think it is right now to ask the British people, to put their trust in me and the Conservative Party to deliver on their vote previous year a Brexit plan that will make a success for this country and deliver a stronger, fairer global Britain in the future".

"I will be debating these issues publicly across the country", she told parliament.

Whereas with Labour, we see no clear plan or aims for any potential negotiations if they were to somehow win this election.

The SNP stood apart from the other mainstream parties, accusing Ms May of political opportunism in the timing of the vote, but did not actively block it, choosing instead to abstain.

Piers Corbyn accused the corporation of a series of cover ups to protect the establishment - that included making attacks on his brother - but insisted Labour could still win a "reasonable" majority.

May hit back that Labour offered only "bankruptcy and chaos", but denied she was complacent, saying: "We will be out there fighting for every vote".
