Campaign begins as UK MPs vote for early election

Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn

But Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn will hit back at claims that the election is a "foregone conclusion" in his first major speech of the campaign in Westminster on Thursday 20 April. And also speak for the values that I have espoused as a chancellor and as a member of parliament for 16 years, which are the openness, the tolerance, the diversity that I think makes Britain a great country. Will the will of the British people be implemented or not?

In a shock announcement, Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May on Tuesday called for an early general election to be held June 8 to seek a strong mandate as she negotiates Britain's exit from the European Union.

The region's MPs unanimously backed the Prime Minister in her successful bid to force an early general election.

Since calling the snap election, Theresa May has made clear she will make leadership one of the key themes in the coming campaign.

Prime Minister Theresa May said on Wednesday an early election would strengthen her at the "most crucial point" in Britain's divorce talks with the European Union, as she prepared to ask parliament to approve a vote in just seven weeks' time.

May surprised allies and opponents on Tuesday when she announced her plan to bring forward an election that was not due until 2020.

If the election is approved Wednesday, Parliament will be dissolved on May 2, sparking nearly six weeks of campaigning. "We will be taking a proud record of a Conservative government, but more than that we will taking our plans for the future of this country". The SNP accused Mrs May of political opportunism but abstained in Wednesday's vote. Polls give the Conservatives a double-digit lead over Labour, and May is gambling that an election will deliver her a personal mandate from voters and produce a bigger Conservative majority.

With Mrs May needing the support of 434 MPs - two thirds of all seats in the House of Commons - some 522 voted for the early election, with just 13 against.

Daniel Kawczynski, who represents the Shrewsbury and Atcham constituency, said that the Prime Minister could not risk entering into negotiations over Brexit with a general election hanging over her. She said she was confident of reaching a deal in that time frame.

Both Sturgeon's Scottish Nationalists and the Liberal Democrats want Britain to remain in the EU's single market - something May has ruled out, along with a referendum on any deal she wins.

It had been hoped talks could start by the end of that month, but EU Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas said Wednesday that "the real political negotiations" with Britain would not start till after the June 8 election. TV debates don't have a long history in British politics, but were a feature of the last two elections, in 2010 and 2015.

"We won't be doing television debates", May said, adding that politicians should spend election campaigns "out and about" meeting voters.

Meanwhile, former deputy prime minister Nick Clegg confirmed that he will fight to retain his Sheffield Hallam seat for the Liberal Democrats.

Liberal Democrat leader Farron said that broadcasters should hold debates anyway, with an empty chair in May's place.

The Prime Minister is set to include pledges that will lock party members and peers into backing her stance as the United Kingdom withdraws from the European Union.
