Canada minister they're looking forward to Trump trade talks

Trump's latest comments stoke fear over trade

"I will stand up for Canada's interests, I will stand up for Canadians", Trudeau said Friday during a news conference alongside the visiting Italian prime minister, Paolo Gentiloni. "And, the fact the changes made in Canada were just a change in pricing that were made in the diary industry to take a look at making sure that they captured some of the market themselves". "Canada buys more from the US than any other country - including the EU, Mexico, China and Japan", Freeland wrote.

The Americans are looking at increasing the 62.5 per cent rules of origin threshold for tariff free status in autos and other manufactured products entering the U.S. If increased to 70 per cent, many Mexican plants would be shuttered and relocated back to the U.S. or Canada.

Champagne will be joined by Finance Minister Bill Morneau; their Chinese counterpart will be Vice Premier Wang Yang, who is also China's point man on relations with the United States. The two nations are embroiled in a long-standing dispute over exports of Canadian softwood lumber, which US producers complain are unfairly subsidized.

MacNaughton also said the trade balance on dairy "massively" favours the U.S.by a five-to-one margin.

Trudeau made his remarks prior to Trump's latest anti-Canadian invective, in which the US president again called out Canada - this time from the Oval Office - as "a disgrace" for hurting American dairy farmers.

He also widened his attack, saying, that "included in there is lumber, timber and energy. We're going to have to get to the negotiating table with Canada very, very quickly".

Canada is not the problem for USA dairy producers and will stick with its system of protectionist dairy quotas, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says.

More news: 'The X-Files' is coming back

At about the same time that the President was taking aim at Canada today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told Bloomberg in an interview that the side with a surplus in dairy trade is the US, not Canada.

"With respect to softwood lumber, our producers and workers have never been found in the wrong", Freeland added.

"What they've done to our dairy farm workers is a disgrace".

She said the Canadian government has established crucial contacts with senior people in the Trump administration and has "very strong lines of communication" with the White House.

Trump brought the issue up again on Thursday, saying "rules, regulations, different things have changed" and are putting dairy farmers in Wisconsin and NY state.

After months of sparring, the two are joining forces against a new dairy pricing policy in Canada they say is hurting American farmers, according to Schumer's office. "I am fairly certain he would have had a hard time being specific about what those "unfair things" might be". Later in the day, the president held a press conference with the Prime Minister of Italy at which Trump reaffirmed his principled, fervent, week-old support for North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and the integrity of the European Union-positions that contradict nearly everything he said on the campaign trail about globalism and worldwide entanglements.
