Chaffetz may not finish final term in Congress

In a Facebook announcement on Wednesday, he crowed that had he made a decision to run again, he'd handily beat any challenger. "Many of you have heard me advocate, 'Get in, serve, and get out, '" his statement read. Kidd had raised $15,500 in recent months but was left with only $1,600 after spending most of it, according to his most recent fundraising reports.

"I may run again for public office, but not in 2018", he wrote. Curtis said Wednesday that he hasn't made any decisions but Chaffetz's announcement has "given me pause for thought about my future".

The panel is one of Washington's most powerful, though it might have less appeal for a Republican lawmaker when the GOP controls Congress and the White House.

Or maybe it's something that has nothing to do with any of that!

Chaffetz' announcement shakes up the state's political landscape. His experience in Congress obviously opens up numerous job possibilities, though they may be slightly limited if he intends to return to his home state of Utah. Since his flip-flop on Trump, Chaffetz has been booed and heckled at town hall meetings.

Chaffetz has been more visible than most colleagues as chairman since 2015 of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, a post considered critical for government transparency and accountability. Before last year's election, Chaffetz had vowed he would investigate Clinton "for years" if she won the presidency over Trump.

But Jason Chaffetz's hold on the seat became tenuous with the election of Donald Trump as president and the ethical questions surrounding the new president.

Chaffetz's decision is likely awful news for Allen and the Democrats, as the district is normally not a competitive opportunity. "I am healthy. I am confident I would continue to be re-elected by large margins", Chaffetz said in his Facebook post. Good luck with that, you baby-faced toad.

While Chaffetz's decision removes a high-profile foe of House Democrats, the seat he will vacate does not appear ripe for pickup.

Political unknown Dr. Kathryn Allen has been transformed into a liberal hero for calling out Chaffetz on Twitter, gaining an early boost in name recognition.

Chaffetz told NPR's Morning Edition in February that his committee was concerned with possible mishandling of classified information when Trump was apparently briefed on a North Korean missile test at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida while dining with the Japanese prime minister.
