Christie defends killing tunnel project he says 'stunk'

As Amtrak rail problems persist Gov. Christie mum on tunnel project he axed

Recent train disruptions in NY have focused attention on a rail tunnel project shut down by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie in 2010 that would be nearing completion now.

In the last month, two minor derailments at New York's Penn Station have created havoc for hundreds of thousands of Northeast Corridor commuters. Cory Booker (D-NJ) and other elected officials.

Trump's proposed federal budget does not include funds for the Gateway project.

Booker would not discuss the protesters or any criticism of Gov. Christie during the news conference. "I absolutely will continue to speak my mind on this, both publicly and privately".

U.S. Rep. Leonard Lance (R-7th Dist.) announced Wednesday that New Jersey was already on tap to receive some $13 million of the first $500 million of the federal aid.

If it had not been cancelled, the ARC Tunnel could have been completed as early as 2018.

Booker would not allow Christie to respond when a reporter asked whether it would have been better to not cancel the ARC project.

"I've already spoken to the president about this, the president is well aware of my views on this project", he said. "When trains derail at Penn Station in NY or get stuck in the tunnels under the Hudson, it is not only a real safety concern, but it creates overcrowding in all of our facilities - Hoboken, Newark and throughout New Jersey's transportation hubs".

At a rare joint appearance after weeks of train derailments and commuter delays, U.S. Sen.

At the time it was made, Christie's controversial decision served to burnish his standing nationally among conservative GOP leaders.

During the news conference yesterday, Christie joined Booker and other officials, including Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, in calling for Trump's secretary of transportation Elaine Chao to visit the region to see for herself why the infrastructure here still needs to be replaced. In addition to replacing the wonky rail tunnels which were damaged by floodwaters during 2012's Superstorm Sandy, the Gateway project also calls for the replacement of the Portal Bridge, a century-old river-crossing near Secaucus Junction that serves as a chokepoint for trains heading in and out of Manhattan.

"We need our mass transit infrastructure improved and we need the federal funding because it is vital", said Sen.

Protestors gathered outside the meeting at Newark Penn Station to blame the governor for the recent rail issues.

"That's done. That's history", Booker said.

But as the politicians spoke, protesters organized by the New Jersey Working Families Alliance stood behind them, holding up signs that directly targeted Christie.

Christie seemed anxious Thursday to wag a finger at the line of questioning from some reporters, saying that "the press in this state isn't happy unless they're bitching".

The Republican governor attended the groundbreaking of the $220 million complex that will house a satellite campus of Stockton University and the corporate headquarters of South Jersey Gas. "And I hate that I have to revisit that all the time". Speaking Friday on RTL radio, Macron said: "What our attackers want is death, symbolism, to sow panic (and) to disturb a democratic process, which is the presidential election".

Eventually, Christie was invited by Booker to comment.
