Colin Miller ready to return for Boston Bruins

Craig Anderson Marc Methot and Erik Karlsson

Bobby Ryan tipped home a pass from Kyle Turris for a power-play goal 5:43 into overtime, giving the Ottawa Senators a 4-3 victory over the Boston Bruins on Monday night and a 2-1 lead in the first-round Eastern Conference playoff series.

Mike Hoffman started the scoring for the visitors with just over seven minutes expired from the clock when he slipped the puck past Rask for the 1-0 lead.

Ottawa goaltender Craig Anderson made a great glove save off a tough shot by Kevan Miller.

Down 3-1 to the Boston Bruins heading into the third period of Game 2, things looked bleak for the Ottawa Senators, who were suddenly lacking in confidence.

David Krejci returned for the Bruins after missing the first two games of the series with an upper-body injury. While they've outshot the Bruins, and are almost equal in shot attempts, many of those shots have come outside the home plate area (widely considered to be the danger zone), which isn't good enough when facing a goalie of Rask's calibre.

Down 2-1 in a series for the 31st time in franchise history, the Bruins will hope to find a series-evening boost with the return of one of their injured defensemen for tonight's Game 4 with the Senators.

At the outset of the Bruins-Senators playoff series, it was a given that Ottawa defenseman and two-time Norris Trophy victor Erik Karlsson was the biggest, most risky individual talent on either team.

"I always say that you make your money during the season, but you make your reputation in the playoffs, and right now he's showing everybody that he's a gamer", Senators coach Guy Boucher said of Ryan.

Ottawa Senators center Derick Brassard (19) celebrates with teammates after his goal during the first period in Game 3 of a first-round NHL hockey playoff series in Boston, Monday, April 17, 2017.

Overall, the Bruins need to allow goalie Tuukka Rask to see the puck better moving forward. That didn't happen on Monday night once the Bruins fell down by a couple of goals early in the game. After going 13 regular-season games without a goal, Ryan has scored twice in Ottawa's three playoff games.

Since then, Marchand has been held off the score sheet for two full games, plus two brief overtime periods.

It all started with a Noel Acciari redirect at 6:05 of the period. The Bruins had only one shot in the last 16 minutes of the period and couldn't get any traction against Ottawa.

Unfortunately for the would-be thief, his attempts were foiled when Senators' captain Erik Karlsson stepped up and delivered quite a chop to the fan's hand that clearly stung him quite a bit. "Win your little battles and it goes a long way in the war". "He's pretty much had his fingers in all of their important goals, whether it's been on the power play or during even strength". With Miller returning, fellow blueliner Tommy Cross will be a healthy scratch.
