Congressman: Spicer comments 'not without some validity'

White House press secretary Sean Spicer apologizes for comments he made suggesting that President Bashar al Assad of Syria was worse than Hitler during a TV interview at the White House

"We didn't even use chemical weapons in World War II", Spicer said Tuesday in response to a question about Russia's alliance with Syria. The comment drew an instant rebuke from critics, who noted the remark ignored Hitler's use of gas chambers to exterminate Jews during the Holocaust. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to know it's never OK to even inadvertently defend Hitler.

Zeeland Congressman Bill Huizenga says he feels Spicer was not trying to use the comment lightly as an example, but trying to underscore the atrocities in Syria. Did he do that? No.

He first attempted to backpedal when asked to clarify at a Tuesday press briefing, where he said, "I think when you come to sarin gas, he was not using the gas on his own people the same way that Assad is doing".

Steven Goldstein, executive director of the Anne Frank Center for Mutual Respect, said: "On Passover no less, Sean Spicer has engaged in Holocaust denial, the most offensive form of fake news imaginable, by denying Hitler gassed millions of Jews to death". But I'm saying in the way Assad used them, where he went into towns, dropped them down to innocent - into the middle of towns. "That was not the intent".

The comment was immediately decried, and after a series of attempts to clear up his words, Spicer made multiple apologies in an exclusive interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer Tuesday afternoon.

The video comes just a day after Spicer said that Hitler did not use chemical weapons in WWII.

"Frankly, I mistakenly made an inappropriate and insensitive reference to the Holocaust, for which there is no comparison".

I'm glad to see that press secretary Sean Spicer has apologized for his absurd comments comparing Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad with Adolf Hitler. "It was a mistake to do that".

Despite the apologies, Mr Spicer's remarks provoked outrage around the globe from those who claimed he showed insensitivity to victims of the Holocaust. "It would be really great if the nitpickers could try to see the big picture and didn't exclusively focus on every little slur and lie I say".
