Dortmund player gives emotional interview after explosion

Borussia Dortmund Teambus nach Explosionen

"We never received any information which suggested any team did not want to play".

Borussia Dortmund took to the field Wednesday in a distressing Champions League quarterfinal encounter with Monaco, a game that was rescheduled following a bomb attack on their team bus on Tuesday night.

Coach Thomas Tuchel criticised the decision to make Dortmund play less than 24 hours removed from the attack.

"It shows us again how irrelevant all the things are that we are doing, in terms of when you see what can happen in this insane world at times".

Germany's Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere had said it was important for the match to go ahead: "we cannot make the mistake of being intimidated". We will not forget it. It was close but also very far from us.

'A few minutes after this attack, the only question that was asked was, 'Are you ready to play?'. We didn't get the time.

The injured player, Bartra, posted a message on Instagram saying he is "doing much better" along with a photo of him giving a thumbs up with a bandage wrapped around his arm.

But both Bayern and Dortmund were beaten at home in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday, just a day after three explosions went off as the Dortmund bus made its way to their match against AS Monaco.

Germany has issued an arrest warrant for a 26-year-old Iraqi national with suspected links to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) group, who is being held in connection with a bomb attack on a popular football team, prosecutors said yesterday.

"Dortmund were not at their fluent best, particularly in the first half as Kylian Mbappe and an own goal from Sven Bender put Monaco in charge", reports The Times.

"I encouraged all the players to take the game seriously".

"But I saw the faces of my former players after the game and I saw the shock in their eyes and that was really hard".

But Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke said Tuesday that a congested calendar meant there was little option for postponing the game further. "I didn't think about football, to be honest".

"I will never forget those faces in my life, for sure", he said.

German authorities have arrested a suspected Islamic extremist connected to what Chancellor Angela Merkel called a "despicable" attack.

Klopp, Dortmund's former coach of seven years, admitted he was scared for the safety of friends and former players on hearing news of the attack while driving home from Liverpool's training ground.

"There was no other possibility (to play the game later)".

Apart from Bartra, who would have been suspended for an accumulation of yellow cards anyway, Dortmund is struggling with injuries - there was one spot free on the bench against Monaco because of a lack of available players.
