Act one involved bringing smartphone camera support across all of Facebook's applications, including Messenger, Events, and Instagram.

"We are making the camera the first augmented reality platform", were the opening words of Mark Zuckerberg as he announced about the new reality image filters and interactive experiences to its new Camera Effects platform.

The AR Studio tool has three inputs to trigger augmented reality effects: Face Tracker (not identity or facial recognition), Sensor data, such as the gyroscope and location, and Scripting APIs to pull in data from other apps and respond to user inputs in real time. The Camera Effects Platform includes two products: Frames Studio and AR Studio.

At the F8 event Facebook also launched a new virtual reality app, Facebook Spaces, created to let users hang out in virtual environments.

They will also enable users to add digital objects or enhancements to their cameras' views of the real world, allowing artists to create augmented reality street art on blank walls in their communities or parents to play digital 3D action games with their children on empty tables while waiting for appointments at their doctors' offices.

Or, actually engage with the real world by going out like a normal person. The new feature will be used for Facebook video calls and virtual reality headset Oculus Rift. This helps people recognize you and makes VR feel more like hanging out in person.
