Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg announces Facebook Spaces, a social VR platform

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg outlines vision for augmented reality at F8

Also at the event, the social network announced new live 3D camera effects will be added to the official Facebook app, enabling users to overlay different masks and effects to their selfies and other images before sharing them on the social media site.

So now we know what Facebook bought virtual reality pioneer Oculus for - VR chatrooms, apparently. Wearing a VR headset, in the form of a cartoonish avatar, can connect with friends in a shared virtual space even if they don't have a VR headset themselves.

The latest services from Facebook operates by creating an animated avatar of you and then transfer you to a virtual world where you are accompanied by your friends.

There's no word yet on when Facebook is going to bring Spaces to Samsung's Gear VR headset, but it seems likely that the company will do so eventually.

"For those of you who have watched us roll out cameras across all our apps and have asked what we're doing, that was act one". Facebook said having an avatar look like you helps "people recognize you and makes VR feel more like hanging out in person".

The most drastic change is still to come.

Facebook launches VR app Facebook Spaces for Oculus.

That's seen the introduction of chat bots to enable users to talk to businesses as well as games users can play in conversation windows - both of these areas have been updated this year. Facebook will introduce an Augmented Reality mode to the camera in messenger, which will layer connected content on top of the world around you.

Mark Zuckerberg kicked off Facebook's annual developers conference Tuesday, and more than 4,000 software developers will attend the two day conference in Silicon Valley. Users will be able to view a Space from their smartphone, and have their video call shown inside the virtual reality environment.

Facebook also announced a bevy of updates to Messenger, its increasingly independent messaging app. Use it to take photos of your experience and share the memories you create in VR with your friends on Facebook. You can also mute, remove or block any of the persons from your space. Now, with the addition of virtual experiences, Facebook is going to have to tackle this problem on a platform that is even more visceral.
