Facebook Launches New Camera Tools as a Foundation for Advanced Augmented Reality

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg holds a pair of the touch controllers for the Oculus Rift virtual reality headsets during the Facebook F8 conference in San Francisco California

Zuckerberg calls these applications primitive at the moment, but he's betting they'll take off by inviting developers to create apps for Facebook's in-app camera-rather than headsets or spectacles.

In the VR category, the company launched Facebook Spaces, an app that allows VR communications between friends via Oculus hardware. He said that this could lead to new features on Facebook's mobile app by the end of the year.

While Snapchat's offering to developers is limited to geofilters, Facebook has invited its worldwide developer community to use its tools to create geofilters, filters, masks, etc.

For example: Two friends who live across the country from one another could put on headsets, open Spaces on the Oculus Rift and meet anywhere in the world as their respective avatars. "But when you look around at all of the different cameras that are out there today, no one has built a platform yet".

We hope Facebook to let us know how we can use its new VR social network for let's say productive tasks, entrepreneurial ventures or educational purposes. He also said that Facebook isn't anxious about "no innovation" allegations and defended copying Snapchat by saying that it was the ground work for Facebook's Camera Effects Platform for developers.

Changes were made and features added to Facebook Messenger that aim to improve communication between consumers and businesses. And that's where companies like Austin's Bold Metrics may have an opening to help people make avatars that match their real life dimensions. These were fine for the time, but what Facebook's talking about is a far more in depth, connected and useful implementation built on top of the Facebook Graph, leveraging the data users have already contributed.

In fact, CEO Mark Zuckerberg has described Facebook's current arsenal of features as being primitive but only primitive because it's still so early on the journey to creating immersive experiences.
