Former New England Patriots star Aaron Hernandez kills himself in prison

Aaron Hernandez

Aaron Hernandez, former New England Patriots football player, was found hanged to death in his prison cell in MA early today, the State Corrections Department reports.

The 27-year-old National Football League star was found dead by guards in his cell at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center.

Just five days after being acquitted of the double murder of two Boston men in 2012, guards said that Hernandez blocked his cell door with several items and then killed himself using a bedsheet to a window.

Aaron Hernandez had been convicted of murder in 2015.

That was before Hernandez racked up scoring records in high school and rocketed to the Florida Gators as a top recruit.

In a statement, his lawyer said there had been no warning signs that Hernandez was planning to kill himself.

Hernandez played three seasons for the team before he was arrested and charged with murder in the 2013 shooting of Odin Lloyd, who was dating his fiancee's sister.

An investigation into the death by the State Police Detectives assigned to the District Attorney's Office and Department of Correction investigators found cardboard jammed into the door tracks of his single-inmate cell to impede entry into the cell.

The attorney called on authorities to "conduct a transparent and thorough investigation" and promised his own examination of the death.

"I wasn't surprised, but I was relieved", said his attorney, Jose Baez, to People.

(CNN) - Former New England Patriots star and convicted killer Aaron Hernandez is dead today.

Meanwhile, Hernandez's former agent Brian Murphy said there was "no chance" he could commit suicide.

As she left the court room, Jenkins would only say, "I am very, very happy" according to reporters there.

Late last week, Hernandez was found not guilty of killing Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado, two Boston men who were shot to death as they waited at a stoplight in the early morning of July 16, 2012.

He was rushed to the hospital at 3:05 a.m., but was pronounced dead at 4:07 a.m.

Fallon said he was not aware of any suicide note and officials had no reason to believe Hernandez was suicidal.

Baez had been helping Hernandez appeal his murder conviction, and as a result of his death before exhausting the legal process, that conviction will be voided. Prison officials say they had no indication Hernandez was suicidal and if he had appeared to be, he would have been transferred to a mental health unit.

Yet 10 months later, in 2013, with the discovery of the body of a friend who had been shot multiple times, Hernandez's life began a dramatic spiral downward.
