Heading home or on a new job: Fresno victims shot at random

Police Fresno gunman targeting whites chose 3 men at random

He is expected to be charged with four counts of first-degree murder- one for each of Tuesday's three victims plus the slaying of a white Motel 6 security guard who was killed last week.

"He wouldn't want people to be divided by this", Valencia said.

Dyer says in both of the final two murders Muhammad stood over the men firing shots directly into their bodies.

Carl Williams is seen in an image provided by the Fresno Police Department. Gassett was killed near his home, Van Curen said. He went by the nickname Black Jesus.

Around 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, Muhammad fired 17 shots in about three minutes, Dyer said.

When he learned he was wanted in the security guard killing, Muhammad made a decision to take out as many other white men as possible before he was caught, Dyer said.

It says she barricaded herself in the motel room after Kori Ali Muhammad gunned him down, forcing police to break down the door. He killed Zackary Randalls, 34, a father of two preschoolers who had just started work as a customer-service representative for the utility and was doing a ride-along.

They scattered, and Muhammad picked the one who appeared heavier, David Jackson.

Pal Eddie Valencia who was with Randalls as life ebbed out of him, said his friend was colour blind.

Police had put out a news release hours before the shootings Tuesday, saying that Muhammad was armed and unsafe and wanted in the shooting death of a security guard at a Motel 6 last week.

A former classmate at the Fresno City College said he would often not show up for classes for weeks at a time, and accuse his instructors of being racist. The handgun that police say Muhammad used, a 357 Magnum, is still missing.

Muhammad has a criminal history that includes arrests on weapons, drugs and false-imprisonment charges. As for a motive, police said it had something to do with his longstanding hatred.

In less than a minute, 16 shots were fired, authorities say. Then, Muhammad shot a white man standing on the sidewalk, then stood over him and shot him two more times as he laid on the ground - that was 37-year-old Mark Gassett, a father of two. "We believe it's a hate crime".

Muhammad told police he did not like white people because they are responsible for oppressing Black people and that African Americans and Latinos needed to have their own land with their own laws.

Although Muhammad allegedly shouted "Allahu Akhbar" - Arabic for "God is great" and invoked in past terrorist attacks - Dyer insists that the killings had "nothing to do with terrorism", reports the Los Angeles Times.

Dyer says Muhammad fired at Williams, intending to kill him, because he felt Williams disrespected him. Chief Dyer says surveillance video shows Williams' murder and the attempted shooting of a second security guard.

Kori Muhammad will make his first court appearance Friday morning.

Muhammad then went to a nearby school, "where he hid out by a trash dumpster", Dyer said.

Muhammad led investigators through the crime scene at the motel as well as the locations from Tuesday's shootings, Dyer said.
