Is Georgia election a sign of a Democratic comeback?

Ga. Republican, At Center Of Planned Parenthood Controversy, Back In Spotlight

The district has been a Republican stronghold for nearly 40 years.

Like in Kansas, Tuesday's special election was widely viewed as a referendum on Trump. Trump has been tweeting against Ossoff during the campaign.

An Ossoff victory, which almost came to pass despite the long Republican tradition in the district, would have sent even marginally vulnerable House Republicans into a panic that the unpopularity of President Donald Trump could bring them down next November.

That means Ossoff, a former congressional staff member, will take on Republican Karen Handel in a June runoff election.

With just two candidates in the race, Republicans are vowing to close ranks behind Handel's candidacy.

For Democrats, Ossoff's near win encourages the opposition movement that has flourished since Trump's election. So we are going to be united.

However, winning the June 20 run-off election will be tougher for Mr Ossoff.

Ossoff had the strongest showing Tuesday in a hotly contested race that some saw as a gauge of President Donald Trump's popularity. Democrats have a long-shot chance of taking back control of the House next year and breaking the GOP's monopoly control of Washington.

Georgia's 6th congressional district has always been a GOP stronghold, represented in recent decades by a pair of high-profile, far-right Republicans Tom Price and Newt Gingrich.

The Democrats hoped to win this special election and have the momentum carry them into the 2018 midterms.

"Only the Republicans could try to define this as a defeat for the Democrats", said Porter.

At the White House, spokesman Sean Spicer tried to do exactly that. The four leading Republicans raised only $3.7 million among them.

"Tomorrow, we start the campaign anew", Handel said, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Handel emerged from a pack of Republicans with help in the form of endorsement from former Sen. "They came up short", he said. "Anything short of describing that as a loss is sort of inconceivable to me in the sense that they literally said that is what they said would do". "The only way you fight that is you have to fire up the Republican base. The only thing that seems fake is Trump coming out and saying this was good for Republicans, that they gave away 48 percent of the vote to somebody that nobody knows". But he rejected any notion that he lost.

National Right to Life has endorsed Karen Handel (R) following the special election in Georgia's sixth congressional district to replace former Rep. Tom Price, who was confirmed as the new Secretary of Health and Human Services.

The Georgia seat is traditionally a GOP stronghold, with a Republican holding it every year since 1978, when Newt Gingrich was elected.

Trump happily congratulated Republicans in a tweet chiding the media and the support streaming into Georgia from other states.
