ISIS claims credit for fatal Paris shooting

When the attacker open fired, a police officer was killed and the second officer was seriously wounded.

The Islamic State (ISIS) is claiming responsibility for the attack that took place at the famous tourist spot, Champs-Elysees in Paris, France.

A known extremist opened fire on police officers late Thursday on the Champs-Élysées boulevard in Paris, officials said. Hollande also said one bystander was injured during the shootout between police and the attacker, and the area has been evacuated and is on lockdown.

Steve White, chairman of the Police Federation of England and Wales, said: "Once again the police family is in mourning and it serves to underline how fearless officers are putting their life on the line day in and day out to protect the public".

"On the face of it, the officers were deliberately targeted", Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet said.

Investigators have already searched the shooter's residence in suburban Paris, Efe news agency reported. The shooting started during the last TV show with all 11 presidential candidates before the first round of the election on Sunday, according to a tweet from Mathieu von Rohr, the deputy foreign desk head of Der Spiegel.

There was an exchange of gunfire and that is when the attacker died, Brandet said. "We have to be strong and we have to be vigilant".

But local police said the shooting was "very probably a terrorist act" and advised people to avoid the area.

An interior ministry spokesman said it was too early to say what the motive was for the attack.

"It looks like another terrorist attack", Trump said.

A Reuters reporter saw a helicopter flying low over central Paris, apparently part of a follow-up police operation. "It just never ends", Trump added. Security has been especially high since Tuesday, when police said they thwarted a terror attack by arresting two men.

A month ago, a would-be terrorist shot and wounded a police officer at a roadblock before being shot dead after attacking three soldiers at Orly Airport in suburban Paris.

The Islamic State group quickly claimed responsibility for the attack, which comes just three days before a tense presidential election.

Far-left candidate Jean-Luc Melanchon said that panic should not "interrupt democracy", and later, Le Pen called on Hollande to restore border controls and immediately expel or detain anyone in France suspected of radical Islamist sentiments.
