NewsAlert: Strident Trump targets Canadian trade on energy, lumber, dairy

President Donald Trump speaks at Snap On Tools Tuesday

Trade groups for USA dairy farmers have complained that a policy rolled out in Canada recently violates the trade agreement by creating incentives for Canadian processors to use local supplies.

One senior government official who spoke on the condition of anonymity characterized one portion of the visit as a "trade-mission oriented trip on softwood".

New York Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, and Wisconsin Sen.

"Decision makers make statements that indicate a position that they intend to take and we're in the business of responding to positions that are actually taken", Carr said when asked about Trump's comments.

Just two months ago, Trump had warmly greeted Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the White House, assuring reporters at a joint press conference that the trade relationship between the two countries was "outstanding" and would only require some "tweaking".

Canada has also fiercely protected its dairy industry in recent trade deals, from the Trans-Pacific Partnership to Ceta, the Canada-European Union deal. -Canada trade relationship when the U.S. International Trade Commission is expected to rule on whether Canada unfairly subsidizes its lumber industry.

"Canada Wood China is vying for a piece of China's $44-billion hotel industry by promoting low-density, wood-frame hotels to the Chinese hotel industry", the organization's website added.

"There's a need for some kind of economic activity in rural Canada".

Mr. Trump has previously raised questions about U.S.

"What the Americans have been railing against for years is the entire supply management system, and what they're saying to Trump (is) it's because of this distorted, manipulative, regressive Soviet-style system that Canada can manipulate the market and create these new classes to allow Canadian producers to compete".

Trump also singled out "lumber, timber and energy" as issues in the Canada-U.S. trade partnership, although he did not get into specifics.

"We're going to have to get to the negotiating table with Canada very, very quickly", he added.

The association representing Quebec's dairy farmers said it's confident the Canadian government will continue to protect the supply management system which, despite Trump's views, has seen American dairy exports surge since NAFTA came into force in 1993. His letter referenced a dairy outlook report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture which he says "clearly indicates the poor results in the U.S. sector are due U.S. and global overproduction".

"In Canada, what they've done to our dairy farm workers is a disgrace".

"NAFTA has been very, very bad", Trump said."The fact is that NAFTA has been a disaster for the United States and a complete and total disaster". "(I feel) he gravely lacks any depth or understanding of our fair farm pricing system (but) I'm not alarmed by his posturing".

The senator has repeatedly denounced the programs since past year, having called on former President Barack Obama to take action.

"The three of us, in conjunction with Senator Tammy Baldwin and other stakeholders, will develop a comprehensive plan to tackle this issue", Schumer said.
