North Korea Warns US And Its Allies Of 'Super-Mighty Pre-Emptive Strike'

The U.S. has stepped up its warnings to North Korea over its missile program and nuclear weapons tests.

The proposed US-drafted statement seen by AFP would have demanded that North Korea "conduct no further nuclear tests" and halt missile launches after Pyongyang carried out a failed test on Sunday.

North Korea will definitely be in the United Nations spotlight on April 28 when U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson presides at a Security Council meeting where Guterres will brief members on the North's nuclear program.

Several senior administration officials told CNN that China was now the focus of President Donald Trump's North Korea strategy.

As part of a broader National Security Council review of options for dealing with North Korea, the Pentagon has been considering its military options for more than a month in case the White House were to decide to take such action, a defense official said. North and South Korea are technically still at war because their 1950-53 conflict ended in a truce, not a peace treaty.

South Korea's acting President Hwang Kyo-ahn called on the military and security agencies to maintain vigilance.

"We have said it as clearly as we can possibly say it".

South Korea and the United States have also been conducting annual joint military exercises, which the North routinely criticizes as a prelude to invasion.

Following a council meeting Tuesday, Chinese ambassador to the U.N. Liu Jieyi warned against any actions that would lead to an escalation on the Korean Peninsula.

If North Korea had more modern technologies, its missiles could reach the opposite coast of the United States.

During Saturday's celebrations North Korea displayed what appeared to be a new range of intercontinental ballistic missiles in their military parade.

The 15-member Security Council traditionally condemns all launches by Pyongyang. The latest USA -drafted statement dropped "through dialogue" and Russian Federation requested it be included. "When we demanded to restore this "agreed wording", which is of great political importance, and expressed our readiness to continue working with the authors of the draft, the USA delegation scaled down the work on the document without explanation of reasons and said that Russia had blocked a statement for the press", the Russian mission said.

From the wind-swept deck of a massive aircraft carrier, Vice President Mike Pence on Wednesday warned North Korea not to test the resolve of the USA military, promising it would make an "overwhelming and effective" response to any use of conventional or nuclear weapons. It was now heading for the Western Pacific as ordered, it said.

Pyongyang's goal is to develop a nuclear-armed missile capable of reaching the American homeland, but at present it is believed to be capable of devastating US allies South Korea and Japan.

The Rodong Sinmun, the official newspaper of North Korea's ruling Workers' Party, struck an aggressive tone earlier on Thursday.

China does not "hold the crux and the key to resolving" the North Korea issue, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told reporters Monday.

China may be getting fed up with continued nuclear bluster from long-time ally North Korea and tilting toward the United States.
