Obama to hold first public event of his post-presidency

President Obama giving his farewell address in Chicago

According to Kevin Lewis, a spokesman for the former president, the event allows the 44th president, who came to Chicago to work as a community organizer, fulfill a one of the commitments he's set out for his post-presidential years: working with the country's young leaders.

In his first speech and first visit to Chicago since leaving the White House, former President Barack Obama will talk to students at the University of Chicago on Monday.

The University has not yet released details about the event or how tickets will be distributed.

It will mark the first in a series of public events for Obama, including stops next month in Boston to receive the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award and in Berlin to meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

It is not known how much Obama will be paid for his speeches, but former president George W. Bush commands up to $175,000 per speech and Bill Clinton averaged $200,000, the Times reported.

The event comes as part of his post-presidency efforts to encourage and support the next generation of leaders by strengthening communities, officials said.

Obama's office said he will hold "a conversation on community organizing and civic engagement" at the university where he was a constitutional law professor.

This will be only the second time Obama has returned to Chicago since leaving office January 20. Established in 2014, the Foundation planned to oversee the construction of the Obama Presidential Center on the South Side of Chicago, which would include the presidential library.

Former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle deliver a farewell address in Chicago, Illinois, Jan. 10, 2017.
