Officer Killed, Another Wounded at Champs-Elysées in Paris

Report Incident in Paris near Champs Elysées

Paris police are warning people to avoid the area around the French capital's grand Champs-Elysees after two officers were shot.

The incident came as French voters prepared go to the polls on Sunday in the most tightly-contested presidential election in living memory.

The gunman attacked as the officers were guarding an area near the Franklin Roosevelt metro station, not far from the Arc de Triomphe on Thursday night.

The incident on the central Parisian boulevard of Champs Elysees, was "probably" a terror attack, they said.

ISIS has claimed it was behind the shooting and named the attacker as Abu Yusuf al Beljiki, suggesting he was a Belgian.

One policeman was killed and two were injured.

A auto stopped at 102 Champs-Elysees, in front of a police van, ministry spokesman Pierre Henry Brandet said. He said it is too early to know if the gunman had an accomplice.

On Tuesday, French authorities arrested two men in the southern city of Marseille for planning an attack during the presidential race, underscoring the fear of terrorism that has been an issue throughout the campaign. He said authorities are looking at many possible motives, and that terror investigators are involved in the case.

Police and soldiers sealed off the area, ordering tourists back into hotels and blocking people from approaching the scene.

Speaking in Washington during a news conference with Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni, U.S. President Donald Trump said the shooting in Paris "looks like another terrorist attack" and sent condolences to France.

The US State Department put out a cautionary tweet, saying: "If you're in #Paris, monitor local news".

He calls the attack a "terrible thing" and says "it never ends".

The attack came three days before the first round of balloting in France's tense presidential election.

A French television station hosting a televised event with the 11 candidates running for president briefly interrupted its broadcast to report the shootings.

France has been under a state of emergency since November 2015, when gunmen killed 130 people in attacks on a concert hall and other sites in Paris. BFMTV has not specified if the unidentified man was the attacker or a bystander.

On July 26, 2016, two armed men cut a priest's throat and told others hostage in a church in Normandy during mass. Police killed the attackers, who ISIS claimed as followers.
