Oil spill reported on North Slope, volume unknown

This was found by the statement of the Environmental Conservation Department of the state. BP and other groups were still working on a response plan for the leak on Sunday, according to the report.

About 45 minutes later, they determined that the well was spraying a mist of crude oil into the air. That's still down by nearly three-quarters from the peak of more than 2 million barrels in the late 1980s.

A leak of natural gas from an Alaska North Slope oil well was plugged by pumping salt water down the well.

On Monday, almost three days after the leak was found, ADEC announced the unified command had to managed to "kill" the well overnight and end the gas leak. It has generated more than 12 billion barrels of oil, according to BP, and remains one of North America's largest oil fields. Hilcorp Alaska has discovered several oil and natural-gas leaks in pipelines, but ice made had it impossible to fix the leaks. So far no injuries or wildlife impacts have been reported. The second leak is still leaking natural gas, as well as a small amount of crude oil said BP. The well is operated by a London-based BP energy company. The department said in an update that the village "has been notified of the incident and is receiving situation updates via these situation reports". By Sunday night, the well had settled about 11 in.

Officials believe the spill was contained to a well pad and did not reach the nearby tundra.

BP did not immediately respond to questions about how much oil the well typically produces.

By Sunday responders had managed to close a valve that stopped the spray of oil.

BP had a 201,000-gallon oil spill in March 2006 and a smaller spill five months later that ultimately caused it to halve production at Alaska's Prudhoe Bay for several weeks.

The Alaskan North Slope crude was valued at a per barrel value of $1.9 over the United States benchmark West Texas Intermediate on 13th April.
