Ossoff Wins Plurality In Georgia Special Election, Teeing Up Runoff With GOPer

Trump's tweet:"Despite major outside money, FAKE media support and eleven Republican candidates, BIG "R" win with runoff in Georgia".

Handel, Georgia's former secretary of state, won 19.8 percent of the vote.

Democrat Jon Ossoff, the 30-year-old us congressional candidate who couldn't even vote for himself on Tuesday, was the top vote-getter in Georgia's special election, by far.

With 18 candidates in the race, Ossoff benefitted from united Democratic support, and a reported $8.3 million fundraising haul.

Democrat Jon Ossoff and Republican Karen Handel will meet in a runoff for a greater Atlanta congressional seat with national implications. Some Republicans have suggested Trump could personally campaign in Georgia now that it's a two-person race, while Democrats plan to keep up the pressure - after falling short in another recent House special election in Kansas.

"That's what we have to do because that's where we fell short in the past; we allowed our basic infrastructure to atrophy, and we have to build strong parties", he said.

"I talked to most of the Republicans last night or this morning, so we all know what's at stake, and we understand that this district has a long legacy of Republican leadership from [HHS] Secretary Tom Price to Sen".

Trump defeated Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton previous year, and Republicans have controlled the White House and both chambers of Congress since January.

However, while they did make impressive strides in traditionally Republican districts, they have yet to prove they can win federal elections in the era of Trump.

With all precincts reporting, Democrat Jon Ossoff led the crowded field of 18 candidates with 48 percent of the vote. "We have defied the odds. shattered expectations", Ossoff said, and he urged his supporters to embrace the prospects of a runoff, telling them they would "carry us to victory".

Cuomo noted. "You have college educated whites that didn't vote for Trump as emphatically".

Roberts pressed him further over how close Ossoff came to winning the election outright yesterday due to how close he came to 50%.

"We're the underdog in this", said Tom Perez, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, said on MSNBC on Monday. And Democratic leaders say they hope the energy he's stirred in the party's base will be a sign of things to come in next year's midterm elections.

"I thought that some of the coverage was a little intriguing as I watched it.Democrats went all in on this race".

What's hard to know is how Ossoff's showing will be viewed by the Democratic base and the donor community.
