Oversight Chairman Chaffetz Won't Run to Keep Seat in 2018
Congressman Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) today announced he would not seek reelection to the House of Representatives in 2018.
Chaffetz, who has served several terms in Congress, said he chose to announce his decision now to give other candidates the proper time period to build a successful campaign.
Chaffetz also started a media firestorm when he said low-income Americans should have to choose between an iPhone and health care coverage - a statement he later said did not come out "smoothly". According to The Blaze, the Republican said he did not believe one should spend their entire career in politics, and after 1,500 nights away from his family over his time in office, it was time to step away. I am healthy. I am confident I would continue to be re-elected by large margins, ' Chaffetz wrote.
Chaffetz, a conservative Republican who was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2008, gained prominence as head of the committee that investigated Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server while she was US secretary of state.
The 50-year-old powerful figure on Capitol Hill, said he was returning to the private sector after more than 13 years as an elected official.
Chaffetz has faced mounting criticism in recent months for declining to investigate President Donald Trump and likely would have faced a bruising primary and general election battle in 2018.

Utah Democrat Kathryn Allen has outpaced Chaffetz in fundraising. Chaffetz told Wright political rancor didn't have anything to do with his decision. He added, "Republicans have a deep bench of talented candidates in Utah who are more than up to this challenge". Does this mean the Third District will stay red in 2018? Here's how she phrases it: "Sources say there is kompromat on Jason Chaffetzl that this is why he turned and that Federal Bureau of Investigation know it" (link). According to a statement posted to Chaffetz' public Facebook page, he has made a decision to leave public service and go back to working in the private sector, despite his stated confidence that he would have held onto his seat in next year's election. "I wish him all the best in his future endeavors".
